In August, I usually take a hiatus and slow down to enjoy what I feel is the peak month of summer. Over the last few weeks, I picked blueberries, visited Willowbrook, a local farm, and learned about how animals can be raised more humanely, which has adjusted my attitude about what I eat. Even ice cream, because how the cows are raised makes a difference. Next, I went to the Ice Cream Museum in Chicago. Yes, an entire experience devoted to one of my favorite food groups. And this past weekend, I took an upholstery class and refinished an ottoman. All of this, along with writing and reading some good novels.
I started a Substack, My Calm Season, earlier in the year. Recently, I posted about the summer parties my grandfather held each year and wanted to share that essay here with you. If you are wondering what the difference is between my website and Substack, think of this post as more of a newsletter, with updates and the occasional essay. On Substack I tend to follow other writers and creatives, and like I did with the essay about my grandfather, I occasionally share longer pieces. I made the decision to keep my Substack open to a wide audience, so I do not charge if you subscribe.

If it is a little quiet around here for the rest of the month, it is only because it’s August, and I like to keep it peaceful. I hope you can do the same!
Peace,
Ramona
